As a new patient, I had to wait 6 months to get into anyone in rheumatology at the U of U hospital. I asked to see the first one I could, as my primary care physician and my endocrinologist (both practicing at the U) thought I have Lupus. Lo, and behold, the day finally arrives, and I initially met with a resident. He examines me, and says with your bloodwork and clinical findings I would say you have classic SLE. Then Dr. Battistone enters, treats me like a moron, dismisses my ANA of 1:2560, and my pictures of when my joints are red and swollen, and my raynaud's. I then called up there to see about scheduling an appointment with a different rheumatologist, but once you've seen one, you can't switch doctors! Under no circumstances. Absolutely unbelievable. With autoimmune diseases it's usually not cut and dry, and to be unable to get a second opinion is just bad healthcare, but then so is having to wait months and months to have an initial visit. If you're going to go to the U, and have to wait longer to get into another doctor, do it. You'll be wasting less of your precious time than if you wait to see this idiot. I now fly out of state every 3 months to see my rheumatologist, who diagnosed, and is treating me for SLE. That's what it took for me to get some help.
