I love going to zoos and out of every zoo I've visited, Hogle Zoo is one of my favorite. Maybe it's because I grew up with Hogle Zoo, maybe it's because I know the zoo well and what I want to see, or maybe it's because the zoo is the perfect size to spend a fun day with the kids, see tons of excellent animals, without feeling like you've walked 30 miles. The only downside of the zoo is that as such a great zoo, it can get crowded. Try going during weekdays or avoiding early afternoon.
The zoo and animals are great! They charge a bit much for the giraffe feeding and train though. My 4 year old daughter wanted to feed the giraffe and because I didn't want her to approach it without one of her parents they charged me in addition even though I had no interest in feeding the giraffe. I explained this to the employee and was told they couldn't make exceptions. Oh well...
It's not huge, but that's alright, especially if you have little ones because you can see most of it between nap times. There's a fun carousel that only cost $2 per person sitting on the ride. Not a lot of interactive activities, but there could be specific days for certain activities that the Zoo offers. The bird show was fun and entertaining. The show is offered at specific days and times, so if you'd like to see it, I'd check out the zoo's website first. Overall, it's a really enjoyable experience! I am definitely going to be visiting again.
The lines were extremely long to buy tickets and get into the park. Generally, this is to be expected at a place like this, but it took an hour and a half just to get into the park. The animals are not very active and most of the cats, you don't even see. Most of the animals just lay around all day and don't do anything. I took my 8 year old brother and he was more fascinated with some of the gates around the exhibit than the animal itself. We spent about an hour here. It didn't take long to get through. I wouldn't suggest this as an activity. If you want to see animal life, go to the Living Planet Aquarium. You will see a lot more.
This zoo is a fun place, even in the cooler months. The exhibits are interesting and allow patrons to learn a lot while there. My toddler loves the carousel and train. There is a small mother's room where moms can have a little privacy while nursing their babies in the women's restroom at the entrance to the zoo which, although a little run down, is very helpful. It's a little expensive, but I imagine that feeding and taking care of exotic animals costs a lot, so I don't mind. One extra great thing is that they give veterans and their immediate family free entry on Veteran's Day.
