I work there. I feel proud to work there. JFS provides therapy, human services, food, and other support to people in need. It's not easy to find; there is no signage. They have provided me with training and other opportunities, and I am happy to call JFS home.
I appealed to the Jewish Fed but that organization consists of two people. Alex Shapiro said he would "talk" to Ellen Silver who ironically he was "seeing" that evening. When Silver showed up to give me the bus pass for my daughter I tried to explain to her I also need one and she turned her back, cut me off, refused to acknowledge that helping me is helping my daughter, since she blurted something out about helping the child (but not the parent).
Amazing community resource to help assist with various physical and emotional emergencies. They service a food pantry as well as offer individual and family services such as counseling and parenting courses. An amazing find in Salt Lake!
The Israeli woman at the Jewish Fed must have heard my message about this too but she didn't call me back. No doubt there is some kind of good ol boys and girls club here, the Jewish Fed is funded only to help the old money Jewish families here, and anyone who comes to town with needs is shunned. However along with the bus ticket for my child Silver also brought a bag stuffed with seven cans of beans.
This agency is the best reason for Jews NOT to move to Salt Lake City. God forbid you need help, we went to this agency four months ago for help, they did nothing but point to the food closet and told us we can get counseling. Who needs to sit across from a counselor who is obviously being paid to listen to you...I can pad someone's salary if I commit to going there weekly or monthly..but I told her I don't have transportation. She didn't offer a resolution. I rode a bike. But then the weather got cold and now I need a bus pass. She of course forgot about us. I called for two months asking for help with at least a bus pass for my kid for school and she refused until finally in mid January she got one for my child to get to school. wasting the first part of that month. I asked for a bus pass for me too as I'm homeless (LDS defines our situation as homeless but Ellen is ignorant of this definition and completely complacent about my necessity for a bus pass so that I can get to other parts of the city to see cheaper housing). . She continues to refuse helping me with a bus pass.
A dear friend needed help in caring for an elder relative. It was our lucky day when we were referred to JFS. They were superb! We left with resources, ideas, and even a better understanding of the caregiver's stresses and opportunities. Thank you very much!
Good for counseling, whether you're Jewish or not. Food bank for rough times, and references for other important services available. Sliding scale fee as well.
