I think of this Sutherland's as sort of a second-tier, less-crowded Home Depot or Lowes. It's not as fancy. There are no self-checkout counters. The selection of items might not be quite as large. You can't order online, then pick your purchases up at the counter. I could go on, but you get what I'm saying.
Sort of an old school home improvement store. Very friendly, very helpful, and you're not shopping at a traditional big box store.
I like the store. Nice people, reasonable prices, good specials. I just wish they were open later.
This place always has basic home improvement supplies on hand, a dollar section, and beautiful plants during summer. I always go here first. More personal service than Home Depot and Lowes.
I live across town, but work not too far away. And even though both Lowes and Home Depot are closer to home, I'll put off purchases from those stores and head to Sutherland's during my lunch break. I actually enjoy going there, and I can't really say that about either Lowes or Home Depot.
As often as I shop here, I'd love to give them a better review, but often leave frustrated. It is the only bigbox type home improvement store for 5 miles, so it fills an important need.
So why am I not giving them five stars? Well, sometimes I really do need to order online, and when I'm in a hurry, those self-checkout counters at Home Depot make waiting in line at Sutherland's a little less attractive.
The problem is that the the store generally seems understaffed, even if the store is empty. The selection is lacking. It is fine for simple projects, but if you need higher quality or something very specialized, you may be out of luck.
What I've just described aren't necessarily criticisms — they're the things that add up to this store seeming a bit more friendly, comfortable and like hardware stores used to be.
